Cookie policy

1. What cookies are

A cookie is a small file a website stores on your device, usually to remember something between visits or pages. Similar technologies, such as your browser's local storage, do much the same job. UK law (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, alongside the UK GDPR) says we must tell you about them and ask for your consent unless they are strictly necessary.

This policy covers www.boomreader.co.uk, which is run by Squirrel Learning Ltd.

2. The short version

3. Cookies we set

For visitors: none.

The website has a private admin area used only by our own team. When a team member signs in, we set one strictly necessary cookie to keep them signed in. Because it is strictly necessary, it does not need consent, and it is never set for anyone who does not sign in.

Name	Purpose	How long
__Host-br_admin	Keeps a member of our team signed in to the admin area. It holds a random session token only, and can be read only by our website over a secure connection (HttpOnly, Secure, SameSite=Strict).	Until they sign out, or for up to 14 days

4. Local storage

When you answer our cookie banner, or choose to play a video, we save your answer in your browser's local storage, so you are not asked again on every page.

Key	What it holds	How long
br-consent-v1	Whether you allowed YouTube videos, an analytics setting (not used: we only count page views on our own server, which needs no cookies) and the time you chose	Until you clear it. After 180 days we ignore it and ask again.

This stays on your device. It is never sent to us or to anyone else. You can clear it at any time through your browser settings.

5. YouTube videos

Our walkthrough and app videos are hosted on YouTube. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), and no video player loads until you allow it, either by choosing Allow videos on the banner or Play the video on a video.

Once a video player loads, YouTube may store data on your device and receive your IP address, in line with Google's privacy policy. Before that, pages with videos show a preview image that we host ourselves, so nothing is sent to YouTube until you choose to play a video. If you would rather not allow videos, everything else on the site works the same.

6. Other third parties

Apart from YouTube videos you choose to play, everything on this website is served from our own site, with one exception: the App Store badge on the homepage and parents page is loaded from Apple, which receives your IP address as any server must to send you an image. Cloudflare hosts the website and keeps server logs for security. Neither sets cookies through this site.

Help button. The Help button in the corner of each page opens our own help panel, which searches our Help Centre on this website. It loads nothing from other companies and stores nothing on your device.

Links to other sites, such as our social media pages or the BoomReader app, take you to sites with their own cookie policies.

7. Managing your choice

You can change your answer at any time using the Cookie choices link at the bottom of every page. You can also block or delete cookies and local storage in your browser settings, usually under Privacy or Security. If you block local storage, we cannot remember your choice, so we will ask again.

8. The BoomReader app

This policy covers this website only. The BoomReader and BoomWriter apps at boomhub.app use their own cookies and local storage, for example to keep you signed in. They are described in the app cookie policy on the BoomReader policies page.

9. Changes to this policy

If we ever add anything that stores data on your device and is not strictly necessary, such as analytics, we will update this page and ask for your consent first.
